User Manual: Vvolt UL-2271 Type Batteries
A Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery powers your Vvolt. Always adhere to the following instructions for handling, charging, and riding. Only use the Vvolt battery with the corresponding Vvolt vehicle. Do not use a Vvolt battery with other products or any other battery with the Vvolt bike, even if it fits.
These batteries will be sold as OEM equipment in Alpha II and Centauri II ebikes beginning in March 2024. They are available as retrofits for other Vvolt ebikes that were produced previously.
These batteries are solely intended for use on Vvolt ebikes. Use in any other make or model will void the warranty of both battery and vehicle and can cause product failure, resulting in inoperability, electrical arcing, or fire.
You shall only charge the battery with a “Vvolt” branded and UL-listed charger. Any use of non-approved chargers will void the battery and charger warranty and can cause the product to fail, resulting in inoperability, electrical arcing, or fire.
Power off your battery when installing or removing it from the ebike and when charging.
BATTERY CONDITIONING
Notice: New batteries need to be conditioned for optimal performance. Charge fully before your first ride, then fully discharge the battery before charging again to full charge, and then fully discharge again before recharging. “Full charge” is reached when the Vvolt charger turns off after beginning the charging cycle.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
- Operation of the status button on your Vvolt Battery produced before March 2025
Press the clear LED status button when your battery is energized to see the remaining capacity.
Location and operation of the power and status buttons on your Vvolt battery produced after March 2025
The silver power button is on the battery's bottom right side.
The clear LED status button is located on the top of the battery.
Press the silver power button to energize your battery.
When energized, the button is pushed in.
When not energized, the button sits flush.
Press the clear LED status button when your battery is energized to see the remaining capacity.
This button only functions when the battery is energized.
Turn the power button off when installing or removing the battery on your ebike.
The battery must be energized before operating the ebike.
How, when, and where to charge your Vvolt battery (pre/post 2025)
The charge port is on the back of the battery above the discharge terminal on Vvolt ebikes produced between March 2024 and March 2025. The charge port is located on the battery's bottom left side on ebikes produced after March 2025.
If applicable, ensure your battery power button is off, and the battery is not energized.
Plug the 3-pin charger terminal into the port on your bike (located on the lower left downtube on most models) or into the 3-pin port on the battery if you are charging off-bike.
Align the arrow on the charger terminal with the dot on the port.
Plug the Vvolt charger into a grounded 120v wall outlet in a dry, room-temperature location.
The status light will be green, then turn static red, indicating the battery is charging.
The charger status light will turn green when the bike is fully charged.
Unplug the charger from the bike or battery, install it if it was removed from the bike, and press the battery power button before turning on the ebike.
You must unplug the charger before turning on your bike. If the charger is plugged in, your bike will not turn on.
CHARGING NOTES:
Do not charge your battery if ambient temperatures are below 32℉ or above 100℉.
If used in the rain, allow your battery or bike to dry completely before charging.
Do not charge your battery outside in wet conditions.
Recharging takes 5-7 hours to complete.
Except for the initial use, we recommend not waiting for the battery to completely discharge before recharging.
Do not leave a battery full or empty for long periods, as this will reduce battery life. Keep the battery between 20% and 80% to extend battery life.
If you know that your planned route is short and you don’t need a full battery, we recommend charging the battery up to 80% instead of 100%.
Significantly reduced operating time after charging can signal that the battery is reaching the end of its useful life and must be replaced. If the bicycle is used correctly, approximately 80% of the battery’s original capacity should remain after 500 charging cycles or two years.
Do not charge in a wet location or ambient temperature below freezing or above 100ºf.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR STORAGE
The bike and battery should be stored in dry conditions between 32º and 90º (f.) If your bike and battery are stored in a non-temperature-controlled space, consider bringing your battery into a living space to bring it to room temperature before riding.
Turn the battery power button off when the ebike has not been used for a few days. If you plan to store the battery for over a few weeks, turn it off and make sure the charge is between 30% and 40%. To avoid permanently damaging the battery, you must check it every 90 days, even if the bike is not in use. If the charge has dropped below 30%, recharge to 40-50% before storing again, or charge fully before use.
The worst thing you can do to the battery is to leave it empty or charged for an extended period (more than a week). This could reduce battery life or permanently damage the battery pack.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR BATTERY OVERHEATS
Your battery is designed to operate in ambient temperatures of -14ºf to 122ºf. Do not leave your Vvolt ebike battery parked in a sunny location or inside a parked car if ambient temperatures exceed 90º. Your Vvolt ebike has temperature sensors to prevent system failure in hot riding conditions and will shut down if the system gets too hot. Wait 15 minutes in a shaded area until the system cools, then resume riding at a lower power setting and speed.
Your battery may be warm to the touch during hard riding; this temperature is normal and not a cause for concern.
What to do in case of battery failure
In the unlikely event of the following conditions, place the battery outside in a dry place and away from combustible materials:
Leakage of fluid from inside the battery
A strange noise
A strange odor
Change in shape or color of the battery.
If the battery does not change after 8 hours, use the drop-off location finder at Call2Recycle.org/e-bikes to arrange a drop-off.
If the battery continues to leak, make noise or odor, or change shape or color, call your local fire department and let them know you have a potential Li-Ion battery fire hazard.
Warning: Do not touch the battery contacts; This can result in electric shock or injury. Before riding the bike, ensure the battery is correctly secured in the frame and powered on. Power the battery off when installing or removing it from the bike.
WARNING: Do not modify, open, or disassemble the battery or charger, as modification or disassembly may result in a short circuit, fire, or malfunction. Be careful when handling the battery, and do not drop it.
